HOW LONG DOES A SPIN CYCLE LAST

How long does a spin cycle last (2018)

Video, Installation

Duration 8 mins

“Living in that foggy, jumbled blur which is a whole lot like the ragged edge of sleep, the grey zone between light and dark...” Chief Bromden - One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

How Long Does A Spin Cycle Last takes an abstract look at mental health. It conveys lying down under the weight of a ruminating mind, working with ideas of self-fixing and voluntary isolation. Using the walled spaces of the home, indoor shadows, ambient noise recordings and muffled sounds through walls to convey the fuzzy place between dream and reality.

Inspired by a collection of dreams and experiences, as well as texts by Ken Kesey, Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf. The term 'supine' and the addition of bugs in the film is a direct reference to The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.

“But the extensive dampness made Gregor sick and he lay supine,                   embittered and immobile on the couch. However, the mother’s                       punishment was not delayed for long.”

This film was part of an installation piece, projected into a small purpose built space that fit a small number of people and awkward to get into. An almost floor to ceiling projection abstracted by the geometry of the corner to convey the feelings of discomfort and irregularity.
